What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda is a holistic approach to medicine that
originated in India thousands of years ago. The chief aim of Ayurveda is
to prevent illness by creating balance and harmony within the body with the use
of diet, lifestyle and healing herbs from nature. Ayurveda has been
practiced in India for over 5,000 years and has recently been embraced by those
in Western cultures.
The actual word “Ayurveda”
is made up of two Sanskrit words: “ayu” meaning “life” and “veda” meaning
“knowledge”. Essentially, Ayurveda means “The Knowledge of Life”. The
science of Ayurveda states that life is actually made up of four components:
mind, body, senses and the soul.
Doshas
According to Ayurvedic
beliefs, there are three vital principles, or doshas, which
regulate and control the biological functions of the body. The three doshas are:
vata, pitta, and kapha.
- Vata energy
is responsible for regulating breathing, blood circulation, and motion.
When Vatta is in balance there is creativity and vitality in the body.
- Pitta energy
governs the body's metabolic systems like body temperature, digestion,
nutrition and absorption. Pitta also controls emotions like anger and
fear. In balance, Pitta promotes happiness and intelligence.
- Kapha energy
controls growth within the body and supplies water to all parts of the
body including skin and hair. Kapha maintains the immune system and when
in balance love and forgiveness are present in the body.
The three doshas are
present in all people however some doshas are more dominant than others.
In order to maintain equilibrium in the body all three doshas need to be
in balance.
